Hongkongers in the UK

by Dr. Eva Cheuk-Yin Li, Lancaster University

In this short lecture, I discuss the largest group of migrants to arrive in the UK after Brexit—the Hongkongers—and the reasons behind this wave of migration. I examine the historical relationship between Hong Kong and the UK, Hongkongers' entanglement with 'Chineseness' in their identity and diaspora community formation, and the challenges faced by this new group of migrants in the UK. Specifically, I highlight the need to continue engaging in discussions on the lasting impact of British colonialism and emphasise the importance of addressing the issues of safety and geopolitics within the British ESEA community alongside efforts to combat racism.
