Living in a hostile environment: the vulnerability of Filipino MDWs (migrant domestic workers) in the UK
by Dr. Roderick Galam, Oxford Brookes University
This lecture discusses the situation of Filipino undocumented migrant domestic workers. Domestic workers are a vulnerable group not only because of characteristics inherent to the job such as it being undervalued and underpaid, and workers performing their job in the privacy of their employers’ home. They are vulnerable also because they are excluded from the protection of labour legislation. Undocumented migrant domestic workers face additional challenges because of immigration legislation. This combination of labour and immigration regimes exacerbates the vulnerability and exploitability of migrant domestic workers.
